EFFECT OF WALKING DURING THE FIRST STAGE OF LABOR ON THE PROGRESS OF LABOR AMONG
PRIMIPARAE

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Walking helps to reduce the total time of the first stage of labor and speed the progress of labor, because it keeps the pelvis moving to help the baby find the way through .AIM. This study aimed to determine the effect of walking during the first stage of labor on the progress of labor among primiparae. DESIGN.A quasi-experimental design was adopted in the current study. SAMPLING.purposive sample of 100 nulliparous mothers with single live fetus in cephalic presentation, between 37-40 weeks of gestation with intact membrane and no medical or obstetric risk factors were included . SETTING. The study was carried out in Labor unit in benhauniversity hospital during the period of April to the end of October 2015. After selection women were consecutively randomly allocated into study (group I) and control (group II), each with 50 parturient. TOOLS. Two tools were used to collect the necessary data ;Thepartograph is used to assess the progress of labor in terms; cervical dilatation, cervical effacement ,fetal descend ,uterine contractions and monitor fetal heart rate. And interviewing questionnaire. The results of the study concluded that, Walking during the first stage of labor reduces the duration of first stage of labor and have more effective uterine contractions .We should encourage the laboring woman to walk and informed about benefits to her and for newborn.
