Abstract
The effective and efficient management of construction resources in the essence of success for any construction project. Traditionally, researchers and industry professionals identify the five main construction resources to include, time, capital, labor, equipment and material. Recently, attention has given to information as being a vital resource in construction operation. this research aims to develop an automated system for managing construction sites. To achieve this, the following sub-objectives are considered: 1) investigate the potential for using geographic information system (GIS) in solving the construction sites problems; 2) formulate an approach to perform the task of managing construction sites; 3) develop an automated system for managing construction sites; 4) test and validate the system. The system uses GIS package to integrate between AutoCAD package presents graphical data; Microsoft Office package, presents databases and text data, and Primavera package, presents schedule data. The aimed system benefits are: 1) constructing visual picture for project site and joining it with information; 2) helping in using JIT concept in projects constructed in crowded areas; 3) determination of the ideal routs for materials and equipments movement inside the site; 4) determination of best locations for temporary facilities and fixed equipments allocation; 5) determination of utilities networks which found in the project site to study the conflict with project components, and effective implementation of safety and quality requirements.
