Abstract
his study was carried out to determine the effect ofthe combination of four N levels (60,90,120 and 150 kg N/fed.) and
five treatments of stripping leaves at 2 weeks after silking on the
yield and yield components of maize double hybrid 215 cultivar
during 1990 and 1991 seasons. The experiments design was split plot
with tour replicates.
The results indicated that plant height, ear height, Yeilً and
yeild components of maize wore not significantly increased by in
creasing N level from 60 to 150 kg/feddan. Whereas stem diameter,
number of grains/row and per ear were significantl increased by-
increasing N level up to 150 kg/fed. in one season out of two. The
application of 120 and 150 kg N/feddan increased the percentage
values of oars yield per feddan and grains yield/feddan over the
control (60 Kg/fed) by 11.32 and 10.97%, 6.45 and5.19%, respec
tively as means of the two seasons.
Stripping treatments significaltly decreased ear length, ear
diameter, ear yield/plant, grain yield/plant, 100—grains weight,
ear yield and grain yield per feddan as compared to without strip
ping in the two seasons. Stripping up to topmost ear leaf gave the
lowest yield and yield components, but stripping up to one or two
leaves below topmoڑt ear leaf had no significant effect on the
above characters as compared to without stripping. On the other
hand, number of grains/row, number of grains/ear and shelling per
centage were significantly increased by stripping treatments in one
season only. The interaction between N levels and stripping treat
ments gave a sign.ificant effect on ear weight and shelling percent
age in one season out of two, but the other characters under study
were not significantly affected by the interaction.
