Abstract

1. The ossification of the neurocranium in Corvus shows that the basioccipital has a prior appearance than the exoccipital. The basisphenoid appears simultaneous with the sellaparasphenoid ossification. This is followed by the appearance of epiotic then alaparasphenoid, supraoccipital, prootic, mesethmoid and finally the ectethmoid and pleurosphenoid.. 2. The basioccipital ossifies in the medial portion of the basal plate which encloses the notochord and the occipital condyle. 3. The ventral surface of the basal plate, the ventral portion of the occipital arches, the metotic cartilage and the commissural praevagalis are ossified as the exoccipital. 4. The otic capsule has two centers of ossification. These are the prootic and epiotic. The first center occupies the cochlear portion of auditory capsule while the second center ossifies in the posterior part of the promenintia semicircularis anterior. 5. The ethmoid region has two centers of ossification; the ectethmoid and mesethmoid centers. 6. The ossification in the cranial base is performed through the basisphenoid and parasphenoid bones. This sphenoid complex has nine centers of ossification; two in basisphenoid, single center of rostrum of parasphenoid and paired centers in each of sellaparasphenoid, basiparasphenoid and alaparasphenoid.
