The membrane bones make their appearance very early in 27.5 mm. embryo before any sign of ossification in the cartilage bone. The pterygoid primordium is the first to appear followed by the palatine primordium. The frontal and parietal have a delayed appearance. The fused premaxillae send off three distinct processes; nasal, maxillary and palatal processes. The maxilla has also three processes; the premaxillary, palatal and jugal processes. The palatine has three processes; the prepalatine, the choanal and the posteromedial processes. The nasal bone has two distinct processes; the premaxillary and maxillary processes. The lachrymal is present while the prefrontal and the postfrontal are completely absent. The angular and the dentary have early occurrence in the lower jaw while the splenial has a late appearance. The lower jaw has the typical bony constituents found in other birds.
