Abstract
Maintenance bundle of the CVC is more effective in preventing the CRBSI which stands out as the main complication resulting from usage of the CVCs in critically ill pediatric patients. Aim of the study is to evaluate the effect of educational program for nurses on CVC maintenance bundle for critically ill pediatric patients. Design: A quasi-experimental research design. Setting: Pediatric, neonatal intensive care units and surgical care units at Benha Specialized Pediatric Hospital. Sample: A convenience sample of all available nurses & a purposive sample of the critically ill pediatric patients. Tools of data collection: Tool (I): a structured interviewing questionnaire sheet, tool (II): central line maintenance bundle checklist which was adopted from Asia Pacific Society of Infection Control, (5102), tool (III) the infant observational sheet & tool (IV): catheter-associated infection score system scale which was adopted from Lugauer et al., (0111). Results: There was highly statistical significant improvement in nurses' total knowledge & practice score post-intervention. Also, there was statistical significant difference between total score of the studied pediatric patients according to catheter-associated infection score system scale in pre & post-program intervention. Conclusion: There was highly statistically significant improvement in the nurses' knowledge and practice scores post-program implementation Moreover, implementation of the CVC maintenance bundle positively affected CRBSI rate among the critically ill pediatric patients. Recommendations: Implementation of educational programs based on the reduction of CRBSI should be a routine in hospital environment.
