Abstract
Objective: Evaluation of hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) expression in astrocytic tumors of various grades to assess the prognostic role of Hypoxia-inducible factor-1 in astrocytoma.
Material and methods: This retrospective study included 40 cases of astrocytoma .The material included archival formalin fixed paraffin embedded blocks from Pathology department, Faculty of Medicine, Benha University during the period of 2012 to 2015 . All cases were H&E stained and immunohistochemically stained by HIF-1. HIF-1 expression was estimated using
immunohistochemistry under the light microscope as nuclear brown granules . Statistical analysis was performed in all examined groups.
Results: HIF-1 expression was not observed in grade I astrocytoma cases, while it was observed in 44.4% of grade II cases, in 50% of grade III cases and in 84.6% of grade IV cases. There was a significant statistical correlation between HIF -1 extent of expression and grade of astrocytoma . Additionally HIF-1 expression is statistically correlated with age,3 years disease free survival and recurrence rate of studied cases of astrocytoma (P value
