Abstract
The present study included 70 malnourished infants attending the nutritional clinical of Benha University Hospital with age ranging from 2-18 months as well as 30 matched healthy controls. A total of 100 serum samples of these infants and 60 breast milk samples of their mothers were obtained. Selenium concentration was determined in these samples using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The mean selenium level in the different types of malnourished infants was significantly lower compared to healthy controls (P< 0.01) than the control group (33.2 + 8.42 ug/L). Correlation studies revealed a significant positive relation between the serum selenium of cases and the different studied anthropometric parameters indicating that selenium deficiency has a significant effect on the growth of malnourished infants
