Abstract
Background: Ischemic stroke remains a major health care problem and a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Depression is a major cause of morbidity in stroke patients. Patients with post stroke depression have lower functional status, increased cognitive impairment and higher mortality rates than stroke patients without depression.

Methods and Results: In this case control study, eighty CVIS patients (45 males & 35 females) and eighty age matched control subjects were recruited for this study. Beck Depression Inventory for subjective assessment of depression. Assessment of severity of stroke was done based on Canadian Neurological Scale. Assessment of outcome on discharge was done based on Barthel index score. In this study shows that67.5 % of the patients group and 91.2%of control group have non, mild, borderline depression while32.5 % of the patients group and8.8 %of control group have moderate, severe, extreme depression which are statistically high significant (p
