Abstract

This paper presents a variable frequency drive using a slip-frequency control scheme for starting and operating large induction motors. The proposed control scheme regulates the slip frequency and sets a predetermined maximum value on the motor line current. Thus, it alleviates the problem of the high starting current of the motor, and suppresses the shaft torque oscillations, preventing them from reaching hazardous levels. In addition to its simplicity and hence cost-effectiveness, the proposed scheme is shown to be capable of reducing the motor line current by approximately 75% when compared to the direct on-line start of the large motor.
