Abstract

Background: Substance abuse is one of the overarching health and social issues that seriously disrupt individuals’ self-control and social adjustment. Aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of expressed emotion management program on self-control and social adjustment among substance abusers. Design: A quasi experimental design (pre and posttest) was used to achieve the aim of the study. Setting: This study was conducted at Addiction Treatment Center and Addiction clinic at the Psychiatric Mental Health Hospital in Benha City, Qalubia Governorate, which is affiliated to general secretariat Subjects: A convenience sample of 40 substance abusers was included for conduction of this study. Tools: Three tools were used for data collection. Tool 1- structured interview questionnaire was used to collect data about socio demographic and clinical characteristics of the studied sample. Tool 2- Self Control Scale was used to assess self-control. Tool 3- Social Adjustment Scale to assess social adjustment. Results: The study demonstrate that there was significant enhancement of self-control and social adjustment among substance abusers post program than pre program and there was a high significant statistical positive correlation between total self-control and total social adjustment among the studied subject at post implementation of program. Conclusion: The expressed emotion management program had a positive effect on enhancement of self-control and social adjustment among substance abusers. Recommendations: Expressed emotion management program about self-control and social adjustment should be applied in addiction clinics and addiction treatment centers for substance abusers to cover a broader spectrum.
