Abstract

Two field experiments were carried out at the Research and Experiment Center of the Faculty of Agriculture at Moshtohor during 1989/90 and 1990/91 seasons. The aim of this study was to evaluate three new lines of faba bean, i.e.. Moshtohor (M) 6, 9 and 11 as well as the commercial variety Giza 2 under different number of rows/ ridge (one side and two sides per ridge) and different number of plants/ hill (one and two plants per hill). The results revealed that Giza 2 gave the tallest plants as compared with the other lines. Whereas line M.9 had the highest mean values of number of branches/ plant and seed yield/fed. in the combined analysis of the two growing seasons. One side/ ridge was significantly surpassed the two sides/ ridge in number of branches, pods and seeds per plant, 100- seed weight and seed yield/piant. While two sides/ ridge gave the tallest plants and highest seed yield / feddan. One plant/ hill was significantly higher than two plants/hill in the above characters except plant height and seed yield/feddan. However, the tallest plants and maximum seed yield/ feddan were produced from sowing of faba bean at two plants/ hill. The highest value of seed yield/ fed. was recorded with Moshtohor 9 when planted in two plants/ hill and two sides/ ridge. The line 9 (Moshtohor 9) was more stable than other genotypes under the different population densities. The results showed that selection for weight of seeds/ plant, number of pods and seeds/ plant, 100- seed weight in the specific population are more effective criteria for the breeder to obtain higher yielding genotypes.
