Abstract
The effect of hypoalbuminaemia and renal failure on serum fructosamine concentration was studied in 30 non diabetic patients. All patients were hypoalbuminaemic, (serum albumin ranged 1.6 -3.4 g/dl). They were categorized into 2 groups, group I (n 15) were patients with hypoalbuminamia and normal renal function and group Il (n 15) with hypoalbuminaemia and renal failure . Serum fructosamine was significantly decreased (P 0.001) in groups I and Il compared to controls, but there was non significant difference in serum fructosamine concentration between groups I and Il. There was a significant positive correlation between serum fructosamine and serum albumin in group I (r 0.76, 0.001) and group Il (r 0.83, P« 0.001), in patients with abnormal renal function (group Il), there was no correlation between serum fructosamine and either urea ( r 0.14) or creatinine ( r 0.02). So, it was concluded that albumin is the major factor affecting serum fructosamine concentration.
