Abstract
Schizophrenic disorders are severe hardships on patients and their families and challenge society in the development of public policies that both preserve the public welfare and afford patients a decent quality of life. This study was aimed to improve the quality of life of patients with schizophrenia and their families. This study used a quasi experimental design. The study was carried out at the Psychiatric Mental Health Hospital in Benha City, which is affiliated to the general secretariat and follower to the Ministry of Health. The subject included all available female schizophrenic patients at Psychiatric Mental Health Hospital in Benha City and their families. They were 40 patients, were classified into 8 groups, each group consisted of 5 patients. Also their families 40, were classified into 8 groups, each group consisted of 5 persons of family members. The tools used for data collection were: socio-demographic and clinical characteristic of the patients, structured interview “The World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL) Scale” and socio-demographic characteristic of the families. The main findings of the study were: There are statistically significant differences between pre and post protocol interventions regarding to the Total quality of life of the studied patients and highly statistically significant differences between pre and post protocol interventions regarding to the Total quality of life of their families. The study recommended that a follow up of this study is needed, with wider utilization and longer duration of the designed counseling sessions wishing to achieve a continuous improvement that helps patients and their families to have better quality of life.
