The efficiency of tumour markers in recognizing head and neck cancer was evaluated. The markers studied were carcino-embryonic antigen (CEA) and Ferritin (Fer) by immunoenzymometric assay. These were estimated in 20 control individuals, 20 cases of benign and 20 cases of malignant lesions of head and neck; before, during and at least 3 months after the end of treatment whether, chemotherapy, radiotherapy or surgical treatment. Serum CEA and Fer levels were higher in malignant than benign patients who were still higher than controls. These markers were significantly higher in patients with advanced (Stage III and IV) cancer than those with less advanced (Stage I and II) cancer.
