Abstract

The settlement of footings on cohesionless soil has been measured in the field for graded sand under two identical square rigid plates size {(B X B) = (305 x 305)} mm connected by steel tie beam. The tie beam has different lengths (305), (610) and (915) mm with (60) mm width. The settlement has been measured under different stress levels and for different relative densities. In addition, the effect of depth of foundations (0.00B, 0.50B and 1.00B) on settlement has been evaluated. Also, the displacement field for cohesionless soil has been determined from field settlement data. The relationships between the angle of internal friction and the settlement of cohesionless soil have been determined under the two rigid square plates connected with different lengths of tie beam under different stresses and different depths. Also, the relationships between the stress and settlement at different angle of internal friction and different depths were obtained. The settlement under footings in the form of contour lines has been presented. In addition, an empirical formula to determine the settlement for two footing connected with tie beam has been obtained.
