Abstract

Objectives:To determine the frequency ofHelicobacterpylori(Hp)infection among primigravidaanditsrelationtodevelopmentofpreeclampsia(PE) Patients&Methods:Thiscohortstudyincluded146primigravidaevaluatedpriortothe12th weekgestationalage,womenwhodevelopedPEwerecategorizedasPEgroupandasimilar numberofpregnantwomenfreeofhypertensivemanifestationsascontrol(NoPE)group.All patientswereevaluatedforageandbodymassindex(BMI)andunderwentHpdiagnosis workupincludingUreabreathtestandHpstoolantigentesting. Results:Twenty-sixwomendevelopedearlyand47developedlatePEand52hadmild,while 21hadseverePE.DevelopmentandseverityofPEshowedpositivesignificantcorrelation withBMI.SixtypatientswereHp+;bloodpressuremeasuresattimeofdevelopmentofPE weresignificantlyhigherinHp+thaninHp-patients,irrespectiveofdevelopingPE.Blood pressure measures and BMIshowed positive significantcorrelation with Hp positivity. StatisticalanalysisdefinedhighBMIasthesignificantindependentpredictorfordevelopment ofPE. Conclusion:HighBMImayunderliethedevelopmentandseverityofPEandisassociatedwith Hpinfection
