Abstract
The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of active listening training program on nursing students working with psychiatric patients. This study used a quasi experimental design. The study was carried out at the Faculty of Nursing, Benha University and the Psychiatric Mental Health Hospital in Benha City. All nursing students undergoing the psychiatric mental health nursing clinical practice experience at the Faculty of Nursing, Benha University during the academic year 2011-2012 were (the target of this study). The tools used for data collection were: Questionnaire to assess nurse student’s knowledge and attitude regarding active listening scale, and observational check-list to measure performance of nursing students regarding active listening. The main findings of the study were: There were no statistically significant differences between control and study groups before program implementation. It inconsistent, the present study findings revealed that there were highly statistically significant differences between control and study groups after program implementation of nursing students' knowledge, attitude, and performance regarding active listening. The study recommended that throughout the academic years, self training booklet will be distributed for nursing students to train themselves how to be active listener.
