Abstract

In Saudi Arabia has extensive high heat generating granites along the west coast shield. The heat generated by these granites varies from about 2 to 134 μW/m3. Exploiting the heat from these granites through engineered geothermal system (EGS) technology can generate about 120 x 106 terawatt hour of electricity. By adopting clean development mechanism through geothermal, the country can offset CO2 emission and save billions of oil and gas and also can supply large volume of fresh water through desalination process.
