Abstract
Gamm radiation-initiated template polymerization of acrylic acid on polyacrylamide as a tmplate polymer in the precence of sodium metasilicate was studied by a free radical mechanism. The obtained copolymerwas soaked in titanium tetrachloride to form poly(acrylamide-acrylic acid)-silicon titanate [P(AM_AA)-SiTI]. Characterization of the resin was carried out using X-ray diffraction pattern and IR spectrometer. The chemical stability of [P(AM_AA)-SiTI] was studied in different media. The results of both the swelling degree and the capacity measurements indicated that both the swelling degree and the capacity of P(AM-AA) for Cd2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, and Ni2+ ions are decreased by the impregnation of silicon titanate in situ P(AM-AA). Also, the effect of pH of the medium on the removal of some toxic elements was investigated. Egypt J. Anal. Chem., 12, 48–53 (2003).
