Abstract
The complexity of operations in maritime logistics increases the pressure on stakeholders to use innovative solution approaches to manage the resources, control the operations, and organize the complex interactions. One of the most imperative problems in container terminals (CTs) is the poor scheduling of external trucks’ arrivals. The proper scheduling of pick-up and delivery operations of container in CTs results in less congestions, more resource utilization and higher terminal throughput and efficiency. In this paper, a design thinking approach is used to study the containers’ delivery scheduling problems in container terminals. The root causes of the truck scheduling problems in CTs are studied through series of the design thinking approach phases. Then, as a solution for such problems, a prototype for an interactive truck appointment information system is developed. By using the proposed solution, the scheduling problems such as; delivery delays, no shows, terminal congestions, trucks’ emissions, and miscommunication problems are expected to decrease
