Abstract

Environmental pollution in industrial localities is a real problem threats all forms of life in these areas. The present study was done to focus a clue of light about the magnitude of this problem in some industrial localities in Egypt. Samples of soil , vegetation , surface water and tissues of wild rats cached near two main factories in Abou Zabal ( A.Z.) locality ( Superphosphate fac. ) and in Kaha near factory of batteries and chemical industries. In addition we collected the same respective samples from a rural area ( Meet Radey Village ). The levels of some heavy metals ( lead , cadmium , mercury , iron and manganese ) were monitored in soil , vegetation and surface water at different distances from the local point source of pollution. Also the haematological picture and residues of these metals were detected in livers and kidneys of wild rats cached from these localities. Histopathological investigations were also carried on different internal organs of wild rats to explore the effect of the examined pollutant on these animals. The results indicated a pronounced high levels of the examined metals in soil , vegetation water and tissues collected from the industrial localities together with different haematological and histopathological alterations in liver , kidney , spleen , lung , testis , heart and brain which appeared more pronounced in animals collected near the sources of pollution in Kaha and Abou Zabal.
