Abstract
In the present investigation, AA6063/Al2O3 surface composites were fabricated using friction stir processing (FSP). The influence of FSP the tool rotational speed on the microstructural and mechanical characteristics of the surface composites was studied. The FSP of AA6063/Al2O3 surface composites were conducted at tool rotational speeds of 1250, 1600, 2000, and 2500 rpm and at constant traverse speed of 16 mm/min. It has been found that increasing the tool rotational speeds improves the surface composites quality by improving the Al2O3 particles distribution, reduction of Al2O3 particulates agglomeration, and reduction the porosity. The composites surface layers showed higher hardness values when compared with the based alloy. The composite layer processed at tool rotational speed of 2500 rpm showed the highest hardness.
