Abstract

ISSN: 1110-0419 Annals Of Agric. Sc., Moshtohor, Vol 35(2): 983-1004, 1997. EVALUATION OF SOME ANNA APPLE POLLINATORS BY POLLINATION TEST, POLLEN VIABILITY AND CYTOLOGIC A L AN A L YSIS BY Atawia, A.A.R. Dept of Horl., Fac of Agric. at Moshtohor Zaga/ig University Banha Brand) ABSTRACT Ten pollination trials were conducted during 1995 and 1996 seasons including the following treatments - open pollination (control), bagging only, hand self pollination and bagging, emasculation and bagging, cross - pollination using pollen of the Dorset! Golden, Ein Shaimer and Red Volos apple cvs. as well as Calleryana, Hood and Le Conte pear cvs. Generally, Dorset! Golden apple cultivar proved to be the most effective pollinator for "Anna" apple trees as it increased fruit set and fruil retention Moreover, the Dorsett Golden apple pollen improved fniit quality compared with open pollination. Cytological study indicated that Dorsett Golden apple and Calleryana pear showed more regular chromosomal behaviour than did the other tested pollinators during the different stages of meiosis division and their pollen grains were highly viable as indicated by germination and stainability tests.
