Abstract
Objectives: To TO evaluate serum levels of Fetuin A and Osteoprotegerin (OPG) in women at different stages of reproductive life and to investigate their relation with bone mineral density (BMD).
Patients & Methods: The study included 90 females divided into three equal age dependent groups: Group A: ; females in the childbearing period, Group B:; pre-menopausal women and Group C postmenopausal females. All females underwent body mass index (BMI) determination, BMD measurements and determination of serum estradiol (E2), fetuin-A and OPG.
Results: The results showed age and sex-hormonal dependent deterioration of BMD manifested by significantly decrease in BMD and serum E2 levels in postmenopausal women compared to both pre-menopausal women or those in childbearing period. Mean serum OPG was significantly decreased and serum fetuin-A levels were significantly increased in postmenopausal women compared to both pre-menopausal and women in childbearing period. Estimated BMD, showed negative correlation with age, BMI and serum levels of OPG, while it showed positive correlation with serum E2 and fetuin-A. Age, serum OPG and serum fetuin A were the significant predictors of extent of BMD deterioration . .
Conclusion: Bone mineral density is age and hormonal-dependent and is worsened by disturbance of bone remodeling factors especially in favor of osteolytic process and obesity-aggravates decreased BMD. Both fetuin-A and OPG could provide information about the bone remodeling milieu especially in vulnerable age group and weight reduction during aging is mandatory.
