تمثل البيئة الملهم الرئيسي للمعماري وهي التي تشکل الخطوط العريضة للفکر علي مر العصور ، فالبيئة لها الأثر في تشکيل أنماط معمارية مميزة ، ويتضح ذلک من خلال دراسة تصميم المساجد في بيئات متعددة عربيا وعالميا ، وحيث أن الاستدامة تعتبر أحد المداخل لتحقيق الغايات الفنية والمعمارية بما يشکل تجسيد للهوية والطابع المعماري ، فيحاول الباحث دارسة استدامة مباني المساجد کمبني يعکس الموروث الثقافي والديني والفکري للبيئة المجتمعية في ظل اضمحلال الموروثات الثقافية وضياع الهوية الفکرية والثقافية في محاولة لحماية وإحياء الهوية التراثية والثقافية والطابع المعماري المحلي . وتعد المساجد الجامعة منارات للمسلمين وأماکن لأداء العبادة ومراکز يلتقي ويجتمع فيها الناس ويتبادلون فيها قضاياهم ومنافعهم. وتمکنت الحضارة الإسلامية من الاندماج مع ثقافات شعوب العالم المختلفة، ليظهر هذا التمازج في صورة روائع معمارية تبهر الأبصار بهندستها الفريدة.
