Abstract

Urbanization is a global trend that is mainly determined by excessive population growth, especially in developing countries such as Egypt. The pattern and limits of urbanization can be observed by modeling spatial and temporal dimensions. In this study, GIS and remote sensing were used to analyze urbanization and trends in the last 25 years of the 6th of October City, one of the largest new cities in Egypt. Five satellite images of Landsat, obtained in 1990, 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2015 were calibrated, rated and compared with ENVI 5.1 and Arc GIS 10.2software. . The classified images were also analyzed to determine urban expansion trends in 6th of October City during four time periods. The results of the study showed that the southern trend of urban expansion was prevalent during the period 1990-2000 (2.31 km2), while the northern trend was predominant during the period 2000-2005, the eastern trend of urban increase is prevailing in two consecutive periods until 2010. The need to support future urban planning strategies by assessing temporal spatial changes and trends in urban urbanization.
