Abstract
Background: the goal of this study was to determine the association between hypothermia and poor neonatal outcomes and mortality in neonates admitted to intensive care units (NICU) of Benha University Hospitals. Enhance awareness of the importance of maintaining normal neonatal temperature. Methods: This study was conducted on all neonates admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Benha University Hospital during the period of study. Axillary or rectal body temperatures were recorded at the time of admission. Results: The study included 288 neonates who were further divided according to their outcome into Survived group: included 227 neonates (78.8%), their mean gestational age was 35.4±2.9 weeks. Died group: included 61 neonates (21.2%), their mean age was 31.9±3.8 weeks. Conclusion: Body temperature correlates positively with gestational age, Apgar score, weight. Hypothermia was associated with mortality and complications such as increase need and duration of oxygen support, pulmonary hemorrhage, sepsis, IVH and NEC. More aggressive approaches are required to reduce admission hypothermia
