SUMMARY

Neonatal thrombocytopenia remains a common clinical problem. Fortunately, most episodes of thrombocytopenia are mild or moderate and resolve spontaneously without apparent clinical sequelae.

Hence, the aim of this study is to detect the incidence and severity of neonatal thrombocytopenia in our NICUs and to stand on its most important causes.

This study was conducted on 93 neonates from 0-28 days of age admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) of the Pediatric Department, Benha University Hospital during the period from December 2009 to June 2010, with different clinical problems. The consultant pediatrician assisted in providing the clinical provisional diagnosis and in obtaining the consent of the parents.

Our cases were divided according to provisional diagnosis into 7 groups "Sepsis, RDS, Jaundice, TTN, HIE, Bronchiolitis and Miscellaneous".

The complete blood count (CBC) test is done to all cases admitted in our ward as a part of routine investigation, CBC is done in the frist 72hrs after birth and if not reveal thrombocytopenia another CBC is done after 72hrs. Then a follow up CBC was done one week interval from the previous one.
