Premature rupture of membranes (PROM) is one of the most confusing and controversial problem facing clinicians. The aim of the present study was to estimate incidence of premature rupture of membranes, find out the risk factors associated with PROMand assess the impact of PROM on maternal and neonatal condition. A case- control descriptive design was used for the conduction of the study. The sample of the study consisted of (300) parturient women in labor selected purposively from the labor unit at zagazig university hospital. Tools used in the study included questionnaire and assessment sheets that were used to collect data. Results obtained from this study revealed that the incidence of PROM was 12%. The most common risk factors were infection, malnutrition, less education and lower socio-economic status. As well as the effect of PROM on maternal through progress of labor, most of women were in labor within 14-18 hours. And mode of delivery, nearly two third women delivered normally, the main maternal complication were maternal distress, infection, fetal distress. Regarding neonatal outcome, it was found that most of newborn had good apgar score at 5 min and had a good neurological maturity.
