Objective:Tomeasuretheserum levelofadiponectininpreeclampticEgyptianpregnantwomen
andthepossiblecorrelationsofmaternaladiponectinleveltomeasuredinsulinresistanceinsuch
caseandtomacroscopicfeaturesofplacentaeincludedinthisstudy.
Studydesign:Thestudypopulationconsistedof30preeclampticpatientsand30matchedhealthy
pregnantwomenduringthethirdtrimester.
Results:Resultsrevealedthatpreeclampticwomenweremoreinsulinresistantwithasignificant
decreaseinadiponectinlevelcomparedwithhealthycontrols.Correlationanalysispresenteda
significantnegativecorrelationbetweenadiponectinlevelsandmeasuredinsulinresistanceamong
preeclampticwomen.Pregnantwomenwithpreeclampsiahadlowerplacentalweightanddecreased
numberofcotyledonswithmarginalinsertionofumbilicalcord.Thepresentstudydidnotfound
anycorrelationsbetweenadiponectinlevelsversusmacroscopicfeaturesofplacentaeamong
preeclampticmothers.
Conclusions:Preeclampticmothersaremoreinsulin resistant,which wasreflected through
increasedHOMA-IRvalue;thisrelationshippostulatesthatinsulinresistancemaybeoneofthe
casualpathwaysofpreeclampsia.Hypoadiponectinemiamaybeoneofthepossibleetiologiesof
