Introduction: Functional status assessment is fundamental to geriatric care. Hence this study was done to assess health status, mental wellbeing and functional disabilities among the elderly aged 60 years and above residing in a rural area, Qalyoubia governorate and to identify the underlying factors and determinants of their functional limitations. Methodology: A community-based cross sectional study was conducted upon 316 older rural people aged ≥ 60 years in Qalyoubia governorate. The collected data covered socio-demographic characteristics, self-reported health status, chronic health problems and the assessment of mental status and functional abilities using the five basic Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and the Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL). Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to identify the significant predictors of ADL and IADL at the 5% level. Results: The five basic ADL and IADL disabilities were reported by 46.2% and 49.4% respectively. Chronic health problems were reported by 75.6% of the participants.
