الملخص
Demand Side Management (DSM) programs means the strategies implemented by the
electric power utilities to systematically affect the utilization time and amount of electric
energy by the customers (Petroleum pipeline Co "P.P.C"). The potential of DSM programs to
reduce the system peak depends on the customers willingness and capability to alter the end
use activities such as the time of day to operate the electrical load. The DSM programs will
change the load pattern of customers by decrease load demand during peak period and/or
increase load factor. The expected benefit of DSM is the reduction of power system operation
cost and the postponement of constructing new generation units.
Different utilities have different programs to be applied on their customers. These
programs are different according to the number of participated customers in the program,
nature of the targeted load type (commercial, industrial or residential), the revenue from each
program and the level of customers satisfaction or reaction towards similar applied programs.
These programs can be augmented in five steps : DSM targets, financial and feasibility study,
designing of effective programs program implementation & monitoring and program
evaluation.
Industrial sector is one of the largest user of energy in utilities (in Egypt industrial
sector consuming about 36% of total energy generated). Since motors are the principle energy
users, different energy savings, strategies have been applied to reduce their energy
consumption. These strategies include using high efficient motor and Variable Speed Drive
(VSD). It is clear that the use of VSDs and energy efficient motors leads to substantial energy
savings and an enormous reduction in emissions.
