Model tests were carried out on strip, circular, pile and pier foundations resting on expansive clay. Water was let into the clay and the resulting distribution of heave was measured by adopting the stereo photogrammetric method. This method could be used by artificially changing the texture of the clay by scattering sand on its photographed surface. Heave distribution was affected by the presence of foundations in different forms. However, it occurred in the vertical direction only regardless the type of foundation.
