Impact of dietary fibres supplementation on body weight, blood pressure and blood lipids among a group of obese women in Zagazig city.

الملخص
The aim of this double blinded, placebo-controlled intervention study was to assess the impact of dietary fibres supplementation on body weight, blood pressure and blood lipids among a group of obese adult women . The target sample for this study comprised sixty obese women (BMI >30) and of age range 30-45 years, selected from a centre of weight reduction in Zagazig city, Sharkia Governorate, during the period from August 2003 to February 2004.The intervention consisted of a hypocaloric diet (high fibre diet with a fibre content of 25gms), in combination with either a dietary fibre supplement (Bran capsules) or placebo capsules. Women were categorized by using systematic random sampling method into two equal groups: Group I : included thirty obese women received the fibre capsules (bran capsules) at a dose of 5 capsules to be swallowed with 300ml. water three times/day,30 minutes before meals to provide a fibre supplement of about 6gms daily. Group II: included the other thirty obese women and received the placebo capsules. The intervention continued for 12 weeks with weekly follow-up sessions. Pre and post- intervention data were presented and analyzed. The results of this study revealed that the difference in the mean body weight between studied groups in the pre intervention period was statistically insignificant (P>0.05). Adding a dietary fibre supplement of 6 grams per day for 3 months to a hypocaloric diet in group I (fibre group) leads to a significant reduction in the mean body weight from 87.28 ± 3.82 pre-intervention to 76.41 ± 4.12 post intervention (P
