Abstract:
Background: Total knee arthroplasty(TKA) remains the preferred surgical treatment for the majority of patients with end-stage joint disease.
Material and Methods: The medium term results of 47 primary knee replacements using press-fit condylar posterior cruciate ligament-retaining prosthesis (NexGen - Zimmer) were reported. The average age of patients was 55 years (48 – 64). There were 27 females and 15 males (5 cases were bilateral). All patients had osteoarthritis. The follow up period ranged from 3- 5 years (average 3.8 years). The clinical outcome was assessed using the International Knee Society score.
Results: The radiological assessment showed no osteolysis or progressive radiological loosening of any of the components. The overall rate of implant survival was 97.9% (one knee was revised due to infection).
Conclusion: The study showed that cementless total knee replacement can achieve excellent results in active patients with end-stage osteoarthritis. Polyethylene wear, osteolysis and loosening of the prosthesis were not major problems for these patients, although it is possible that this observation could change with longer periods of follow-up.
